Special Events
The "László Lajtha" Folklore Documentation Center is engaged in various activities in order to promote Hungarian folk culture. Being a research center, the FDC is engaged in organizing academic lecture series and conferences related to the topic of Hungarian folklore. Books are also regularly published and the FDC hosts several book presentations. The exhibits (link!) organized by the FDC can be visited at the Hungarian Heritage House.
The two lecture series organized by the FDC focus on the wider context of ethnography and the narrower context of Hungarian dance-houses and folklore on stage respectively. The "Népismei tudománytár" [A Catalogue of Folklore] is a series featuring guest ethnographers lecturing on Hungarian folk music, folk traditions and beliefs. Lectures usually take place every other month. The series is organized by István Pávai, for further information please contact Ms. Eszter Szabó. The "Táncháztöténet" [History of the Hungarian dance-house] series concentrates on the different (sociological, historical, artistic and ethnic) aspects of the Hungarian dance-house phenomenon. The series is organized by István Pávai, for further information please contact Ms. Eszter Szabó. Lectures are free, all are welcome.
The conferences organized by the FDC provide a good chance for ethnographers to meet and exchange views. Previous conference topics range from the music of specific Hungarian regions to the archiving methods of different folklore documentation centers in the Carpathian Basin. The last conference was a musicological symposium on the 115th anniversary of László Lajtha's birth and 45th anniversary of his death in 2008.
The Hungarian Heritage House is proud to publish monographs and studies on several issues of Hungarian folklore. Books are presented by the authors on the occasion of a ceremony followed by a debate.
